TTUD in KY Hospitals

Hospitals get help with tobacco cessation efforts

Kentucky's hospitals are smoke free, presenting patients with a great opportunity to quit smoking while they are in the hospital.

The Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) at U of L recently developed an innovative program, "Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in Kentucky Hospitals".  It is free to Kentucky hospitals and is currently being distributed across the state.

"Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in Kentucky Hospitals" is a project of KCP's Providers Practice Prevention and the KDPH Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program with the Kentucky Hospital Association.  The program features:
  • A web-based video training for clinicians and staff on tobacco treatment.  It demonstrates how to effectively and quickly address tobacco use with ALL patients, regardless of condition, as well as provide appropriate treatment for those willing and not willing to quit.  The training provides free CE credit to nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, and pharmacists.
  • Information about and fax referral sheets for the free Kentucky Quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, where patients interested in quitting will receive proactive calls from coaches who will assist them in a personalized plan.
  • A toolkit providing information and resources to assist hospital administrators in systems approaches for staff, patients and visitors, especially for facilities with tobacco-free policies.

For more information, hospital staff should call Celeste Worth, KCP's Professional Education and Training Manager, at (502) 852-6318.

2010 Cancer Survivor Celebration

Faces of Cancer

Another successful Cancer Survivor Celebration took place on April 29, 2010!  The James Graham Brown Cancer Center and Kentucky Cancer Program invited cancer survivors to attend the 11th annual Cancer Survivor Celebration in a new location this year.  The celebration took place inside the Clinical and Translational Research Building.  There was music, food, informational booths, guest speakers, and the Pegasus Parade!

Faces of Cancer was our theme this year for the celebration.  Several cancer survivors had their photos taken to help create our invitation for the party and a video.  View video of these cancer survivors.

KCP and Play It Safe In The Sun teamed up with the University of Louisville's head Baseball Coach Dan McDonnell, to create a PSA on sun safety to help spread the word about the use of sunscreen.  Coach McDonnell is an avid sunscreen user and encourages everyone, even his athletes, to "choose their cover and wear an SPF of 15 or higher" when going outdoors.

Fore more information on the use of sunscreen or about our Play It Safe In The Sun campaign, please contact Jaime Caudill at 502-852-6318.
