Life
Through Knowledge
The
James Graham Brown Cancer Center, working through the Kentucky Cancer
Program and Kentucky
African Americans Against Cancer (KAAAC), is expanding current
outreach and education programs for African Americans in Louisville.
Special projects will be developed and implemented to address the
needs of this high risk population, including the development and
distribution of culturally appropriate materials. The initial focus
will be on increasing awareness of breast cancer and the importance
of early detection. Future emphasis will include other cancers that
affect the African American community.
The outreach program will be funded by the Harriett B. Porter Cancer
Education and Research Endowment. The fund was created with a $250,000
gift by Woodford Porter Sr. in honor of his late wife Harriett.
Proceeds
from the endowment will help promote cancer prevention and screening
in Louisville's African American community, as well as support research
that may someday help find a cure for cancer. The endowment will
provide funding in perpetuity - creating a living legacy of cancer
survivors.
