Mobile Mammography Services
Breast cancer education and outreach programs
are a priority for KCP. Although cancer control specialists promote the use
of mammography, many counties do not have local facilities. Access,
particularly among low income women, is a special concern. In 1990, the
Brown Cancer Center responded to a call for action from the Kentucky
Department for Public Health and started a statewide mobile mammography
program to serve health department patients. KCP supports the service
through community presentations and the distribution of education materials
about breast cancer detection.
The Brown Cancer Center has now expanded the
program to two mobile mammography units. The original van still travels
statewide to local health departments, businesses, and community
organizations as requested. The addition of the new transportable unit has
increased access for low income women in the metropolitan Louisville and
Jefferson County area.
