Cooper Clayton Method to Stop Smoking

The Cooper Clayton Method is a safe and effective way to help people stay smoke-free for the rest of their lives. The Cooper/Clayton Method is a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program. It was started over 20 years ago by two faculty members at the University of Kentucky. Thomas Cooper, DDS, a dentist and former heavy smoker developed the program with Richard Clayton, PhD, an expert on drug addiction.

This highly successful program is science based utilizing proven methods, which include education, skills training and social support. The classes consist of 12 one hour weekly sessions followed by relapse prevention. Participants utilize nicotine replacement products such as the nicotine gum and patch.

Working with the Kentucky Department for Public Health, local health departments and numerous community partners, ongoing classes are currently conducted across the state. The classes are available to Kentuckians free, except for the cost of the nicotine replacement products and the small cost of a book.

KCP, with Drs. Cooper and Clayton, is also offering free training for community health care professionals and former smokers, who would like to learn how to become class facilitators. To obtain additional information about classes in your region, please call the local KCP office.
